While we often knit with the intention of making a cozy, embracing fabric to keep out the cold, there is one kind of knitting that aims for openness, for letting light and air flow freely: lace. We create openness in our knitting by making intentional holes, which in turn form patterns.

MDK Field Guide 15: Open is the latest in this series of fun little pattern books from Modern Daily Knitting. This issue contains five gorgeous lace designs by British designer Jeanette Sloan. These contemporary designs include two narrow scarves, a sideways-knitted triangular shawl, a stole and a cocoon like cardigan that can be worn two ways.

Jeanette Sloan hails from England, where knitted lace has a long history. She likes to focus on contemporary interpretations though. Give her an old lace stitch guide, and her creative flood gates open.

Jeanette offers guidance to novice lace knitters and suggests working through the designs in the order they appear in the book to build skill and confidence. But there is plenty here to dive straight into for the more experienced lace knitter.
